Swayamdeep Zen Kendra, Dharwad

Meditation forms the foundation of all the work at Swayamdeep Zen Kendra. Over the years, the Kendra has explored the understanding and practice of Zen in simple, lived ways — through everyday life rather than formal instruction.

One of its early initiatives was Swayamdeep Kaliveedu, a residential learning program that ran for five years. Each year, six to eight participants were selected for an immersive, year-long journey. They were called Kalis — a Kannada word with a dual meaning: one who learns, and one who courageously works through their own limitations.

During this time, Kalis engaged deeply in farm work, theatre, creative expression, and self-reflection. Learning emerged through participation and lived experience rather than theory, encouraging awareness, discipline, and inner inquiry.

As the Kendra evolved, so did its format. Today, Swayamdeep invites volunteers to stay at the farm for varying periods and experience a simple, community-based way of living. Learning now unfolds through shared daily practice — preparing food, physical labour, meditation, song, theatre, and supporting workshops focused on sustainability and inner growth.

Volunteers are welcome to stay for short or extended durations, depending on their interest and availability, and to experience the quiet joy, responsibility, and discipline of conscious community living.
